Writing a worldbuilding for a novel

Miro

Obsidian
The process of writing a novel and creating a world has always fascinated me. That's why, in 2025, I decided to embark on a personal writing project. I chose to focus on the technical side of how a world works, with complex economics, politics and international relations.

Learnings

Starting from scratch
Before I began, I already had an idea of what the main rules of this world would be. Simply defining them to start with proved very useful in quickly iterating around them and quickly getting a solid base.

Avoid clichés
When developing a universe, it's easy to fall into clichés. A world that's too manichean, or a demography that's too flat. To avoid this, it's a good idea to look at current or past geopolitics.

Write a quest based on a documented historical fact

Miro

Unreal Engine 5
During my studies at Isart, I had the opportunity to work on a tomb at the request of one of Shadow of the Tomb Raider's Game Designers. Each person was assigned a country, and we had to find a historical fact and create a quest, a level design and a series of puzzles around it.

Learnings

Finding sources
I had to document a historical event in Mexico, so I decided to start with the War of Independence. I really enjoyed this exercise and learned a lot about the history of this country.
Adapting game mechanics to the narrative
To achieve a coherent, immersive level for the player, it's important to link the puzzle mechanics with the story being told to the player.

Integrating new mechanics into an existing game
In order to provide a relevant experience for this exercise, it was important to learn the game's basic mechanics and metrics.
